Practice opportunities with Devon & Nico Hase

We are pleased to share the news that good Dhamma friends devon + nico hase will be in Madison for two months this spring, beginning in mid-April. They have graciously agreed to lead our Sunday night sitting on April 21 and our Friday night sitting on May 3. Both sitting groups are hybrid, meeting in person in Madison and on Google Meet. Our Sunday night group meets in person at First Unitarian Society, 900 University Bay Dr., in the Landmark Auditorium. The Friday night group meets in person at Herspiral Contemplative Arts, 303 South Paterson St. Find out more about both sitting groups here.

We also want to let our community know about two daylong retreats — not hosted by Madison Insight — that devon + nico are offering in person in Madison in April and May. Please click the links below for full information about these wonderful practice opportunities.

  • Sunday, April 28 – Metta
10 am to 4 pm CT
Life is hard. And if we're not careful, we can slip into a subtle hardness toward life, and to the ones we share our lives with. What's the answer? In a word: metta. In this daylong retreat, explore the quality of heart that softens to each moment.

  • Sunday, May 26 – Awakening Through the Senses
10 am to 4 pm CT
Buddhism can get pretty complicated. What if a few words were enough to find release—right here, right now? In this daylong retreat, delve into the practices of the Bahiya Sutta, which emphasizes directly knowing experience—right here, right now.

Devon and Nico are two of the three co-founders of our Friday night sangha and former Madison Vipassana board members. Since leaving our community in 2017, they have devoted themselves to Dhamma practice in various forms, including teaching, writing, and long retreats. They are co-authors of How Not to Be a Hot Mess: A Survival Guide for Modern Life. We are delighted they will be in Madison soon to share the Dhamma!

devon hase began meditation training in 2000. She has practiced intensively in the Insight and Vajrayana traditions and currently teaches at the Insight Meditation Society, Spirit Rock, and other centers.

nico hase lived in a monastery for six years before earning a Ph.D. in counseling psychology and becoming a full-time Insight Meditation teacher. He currently mentors mindfulness teachers, teaches online and in-person retreats, and speaks with students in one-on-one sessions.
