Living in Interesting Times: An Online Meditation Retreat
Whether the saying “May you live in interesting times” is a blessing or a curse depends on our conscious embodiment of Dhamma. These times seem cursed by pandemic, insurrection, wildfires and floods, and disinformation, loading us with opportunities for anxiety, grief, anger, and overwhelm. Sweeping these under the rug overloads the unconscious. Reacting outwardly contributes to the agitation and polarization. Buddhist teachings point to a middle way of practice grounded in mindfulness, compassion, equanimity, and wisdom.
What is our place, each of us, in this bewildering cauldron? Is our meditation an escape or a refuge? How might Buddha-Dhamma illuminate a pathway for us, one that does better than mere survival? How can sangha support us and others in these difficult times?
In this online retreat, we together will explore these challenges of the historical moment in terms of Dhamma understanding and practice through a mix of guided meditation, Dhamma reflections, Q&A, and conversation. Both beginners and experienced meditators are welcome.
Santikaro will lead four sessions daily (all times Central):
7:00 am Guided meditation: Brief introduction and 45-minute practice
10:00 am Meditation teaching, exercises, and support
2:00 pm Q&A and community conversation
7:00 pm Dhamma talk: Path reflections
** All sessions will be recorded.
The retreat will open Thursday evening, October 7, at 7:00 pm and will keep the above schedule of online Zoom sessions through Sunday, October 10, ending by 4:00 pm.
You will be encouraged to practice on your own during breaks in the schedule — sitting, walking, yoga, and qigong, as you are able. We will also recommend that you unplug from devices and screens as much as possible, except during our sessions in sangha.
The retreat is freely offered, but registration is required. After registering, you will receive the Zoom meeting link to attend the retreat. Should you wish to offer dana (a freewill donation) to Santikaro, information on how to do so will be emailed after the retreat ends.
